ONGOING FOCUS
Health and Human Services
ACA continues to work with leaders in various Asian communities to more fully understand and address the critical needs of the various populations. The current focus is the Asian Symposia on Health which has:
Developed an education and awareness program on Hepatitis B and its critical impact on Asians as well as initiated work with local health departments and health providers to pursue a Hepatitis B screening and vaccination process. Further, ACA is providing additional educational programs on the health disparities that impact Asians regarding cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and teen smoking.
Cultural Initiatives
ACA continues to work with the Northern Kentucky University Latino and Multicultural Center assuring an Asian presence.
Our organization provides training for individuals and organizations to assure an understanding of cultural distinctions for whatever setting in which they operate.
ACA initiated and set up an Asian web site allowing for the posting of information about various Asian activities in the community.
Our Accomplishments
- Convened the Asian Summit enabling local Asian communities to identify several specific issues for further action. Another Summit is being planned in the fall of 2008.
- Created and funded the Asian Symposia on Health with a focus on raising awareness and educating local communities of the critical health issues facing Asians in our community.
- Developed and continue to distribute the Community Resource Guide which outlines the human services available so Asian populations know where to turn for family needs such as health, food, legal, shopping, housing and more.
- Developed cultural competency training seminar/workshops including an Asian overview of Japan, China, Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. The awareness resulted in higher usage of services by Asians. The workshops trained social services providers such as law enforcement, legal aid, health care and county agencies increasing their cultural sensitivity.
- Operates as part of the Ohio Asian American Health Coalition (OAAHC) providing input to this statewide coalition in development of its goals working with the Regional Coordinator located in the Cincinnati-Dayton area. The focus of this statewide project is to increase the capacity of Asian organizations in the state. This Coalition also plans to develop a statewide Asian needs assessment process.
